different from those in many other states. Nevada does not set a general APR cap for most title loan borrowers, so the cost of borrowing can vary widely from one lender to another.

What Nevada does regulate closely is how the loan is structured, what the lender must tell you, whether you appear able to repay, and what happens if you fall behind. The law also gives borrowers some useful protections, including a short cancellation window and limits on what a lender can do after repossession.

Quick Facts

Title loans are legal in Nevada.

There is no general state APR cap for civilian borrowers.

You cannot borrow more than the vehicle is worth.

You can cancel the loan by the end of the next business day.

The lender must offer a repayment plan before repossessing your car.

If the car sells for less than you owe, the lender usually cannot chase you for the difference.

Nevada Title Loan Regulations at a Glance

Regulation

Nevada Law

Legal status

Legal under NRS Chapter 604A

State regulator

Nevada Financial Institutions Division

Maximum APR

No general state APR cap for civilian title loan borrowers

Maximum loan amount

Cannot exceed the fair market value of the vehicle

Ability to repay

The lender must make a reasonable determination that the borrower can repay

Standard term

Up to 30 days

Extensions

Up to 6 extensions of up to 30 days each

Installment option

Certain title loans can run for up to 210 days

Cancellation right

By the close of business on the next business day

Repayment plan

Must be offered after default before repossession

Repayment-plan window

The offer generally remains open for at least 30 days after default

Repayment period

Usually at least 90 days from default

Shortfall after sale

A lender generally cannot pursue the borrower for the difference

State database

Title lenders must use Nevada’s loan database

How Much Can a Nevada Title Loan Cost?

There Is No General State APR Cap

Nevada does not impose a general APR ceiling on title loans made to civilian borrowers under Chapter 604A. In practical terms, that means one lender may charge considerably more than another.

The lender still has to spell out the cost before you sign. Your agreement should show the APR, finance charge, interest rate, fees, total payments, and other required terms.

That makes comparison especially important in Nevada. Looking only at how much cash you receive can give you a poor idea of what the loan will really cost. The total repayment amount is the figure worth paying attention to.

How Much Can You Borrow?

Nevada does not set a flat dollar limit for title loans.

Instead, the amount borrowed cannot be more than the fair market value of the vehicle securing the loan. The borrower must also own the vehicle, and the lender has to make a reasonable assessment of whether the loan can be repaid.

That assessment can take account of income, employment, credit history, the amount due, and other information about the borrower’s finances.

How Long Can a Nevada Title Loan Last?

Nevada allows two main structures.

Short-Term Title Loans

A standard title loan can run for up to 30 days.

It can then be extended up to six times, with each extension lasting no more than another 30 days.

To extend the loan, the borrower generally has to pay the interest that has already built up. The lender cannot raise the interest rate above the original rate or add a separate extension fee.

If every extension is used, the loan can remain outstanding for roughly 210 days.

Installment Title Loans

Nevada also allows certain title loans to start with a longer term of up to 210 days.

These loans have to be structured differently. They must be fully amortized, so the scheduled payments steadily reduce the balance, and they cannot rely on a large balloon payment at the end.

They also cannot be extended in the same way as a 30-day title loan.

This distinction matters because “210 days” does not always mean a 30-day loan followed by six extensions. It can also describe a qualifying installment structure from the outset.

What Must Be in the Loan Agreement?

A Nevada title loan has to be set out in writing.

The agreement must include key information such as:

the borrower’s and lender’s details;

information about the vehicle used as security;

the amount borrowed;

the interest rate and APR;

finance charges and fees;

the payment schedule;

the maturity date;

information about the right to cancel; and

what can happen if the borrower defaults.

The lender must also provide required information about public assistance and financial services that may be available.

The point of these rules is simple: you should be able to see what the loan costs and what the consequences are before you commit to it.

Can You Cancel a Nevada Title Loan?

Yes, but the window is short.

Nevada law allows a borrower to rescind a title loan by the close of business on the next business day after the loan is made.

To cancel, you need to return the required funds or other amount specified by law to the place where the loan was initiated.

If you act within that window, the lender cannot charge a rescission fee.

That gives you a brief chance to reconsider if, after looking again at the cost or terms, you decide the loan is not right for you.

What Happens If You Miss a Payment?

Default does not automatically mean the lender can take the vehicle straight away.

Nevada requires the lender to offer a repayment plan first.

The Repayment Plan Comes Before Repossession

The lender generally has to send written notice of the repayment-plan option within 15 days after default.

The offer must remain available for at least 30 days from the date of default.

If you accept the plan, the repayment period normally has to run for at least 90 days from the default date, unless you agree to a shorter period.

That is an important distinction. The 30-day figure is mainly the period during which the repayment plan offer stays available. It does not normally mean you have only 30 days to clear the debt.

If you do not accept the plan, or you agree to it and then fail to keep up with the payments, the lender may be able to move on to repossession.

Repossession Laws in Nevada

If the repayment plan process does not resolve the default, the lender can repossess and sell the vehicle.

Nevada’s rules become particularly important at this point.

What If the Car Sells for Less Than You Owe?

In most cases, the lender cannot come after you personally for the unpaid balance.

Say you owe $4,000 and the repossessed vehicle sells for $3,000. Under the normal Nevada title-loan rules, the lender generally cannot sue you for the remaining $1,000.

That is different from many other secured debts, where a lender may be able to pursue the borrower for a deficiency after collateral is sold.

There are limited exceptions. A lender may have further rights if the borrower deliberately prevents repossession, hides the vehicle, fraudulently transfers an interest in it, or damages or wastes it.

Ordinary use of the vehicle is not automatically treated as waste.

If personal belongings are still inside the vehicle when it is repossessed, the lender must also make them reasonably available to you.

Nevada’s Title Loan Database

Nevada title lenders are required to use a statewide database.

The database helps lenders check information about existing loans, vehicle security interests, and borrower eligibility. It also gives regulators a way to monitor compliance with Chapter 604A.

It should not be treated as a simple “one title loan per person” rule. The lender must also determine that you have a reasonable ability to repay.

Can I change my mind after taking out the loan?

Yes. You can normally cancel by the close of business on the next business day if you return the required funds. No rescission fee can be charged.

Can the lender repossess my car as soon as I miss a payment?

Not normally.
